UFMG holds partnerships and agreements to promote teaching, research and extension, and to expand opportunities for institutional, scientific, cultural and social development

In order to express interest in making international partnerships and agreements with the university, please inform yourself about the modalities of legal instruments, which are listed in the following item. Subsequently, contact the International Relations Directorate (DRI).

Types of legal instruments

In order to make international partnerships viable, UFMG uses several models of legal instruments. The most common are the following:

Memorandum of Understanding – MOU

It sets the parameters for the interinstitutional partnership. This agreement, by itself, does not implement any activity. However, the establishment of a Cooperation Agreement encourages universities to negotiate the joint organization of courses, lectures and symposia, as well as favoring the signing of agreements (explained below). Some institutions, especially those in Portugal, require a Cooperation Agreement to be signed before an agreement is signed.

It is a category that admits several kinds of initiatives, according to the activity to be implemented. All the agreements must be accompanied by a work plan, which details the activities that will be developed. The most common species of covenant are: exchange agreement, research agreement, double-titling agreement and the joint tutelage agreement

Exchange agreement

It regulates the exchange of undergraduate and postgraduate students, professor and researchers form UFMG and a foreign institution for a specific period (usually one or two semesters). The Exchange Agreement can be broad in scope, that is, it covers all the areas and courses of the UFMG and the partner institution, or of a restricted nature, including, for example, only students and professionals in the area of Human Sciences, or only those of the nursing course.

Research agreement

It formalizes an investigation conducted jointly by members of UFMG and a foreign entity. The work plan of the Research Agreement should specify aspects such as its object, participating professors and researchers, the planned schedule, etc.

Double-titling agreement

It allows students to take part of their studies at UFMG and another part in a foreign university, obtaining, at the end, a degree issued by the two universities. Currently, double titling is possible at undergraduate and doctoral levels.

Joint tutelage agreement

It provides for the orientation of a doctoral thesis jointly by a UFMG professor and a foreign university professor. For more information about joint tutelage, visit the link.

Letter of intent

It is a document signed by representatives of UFMG and a foreign institution, stating the intention to establish some type of collaboration. Letters of intent are normally signed on the visit of representatives of a foreign institution or a meeting of delegations from different universities at an international conference.

Term of exchange

It is a legal instrument signed by UFMG and a foreign institution to allow a foreign student to come to the University as an exchange student. It is a legal instrument similar to the exchange agreement, explained previously, but with a punctual and experimental nature, as it applies to a very limited number of students, and for a short period of time. The Term of Exchange only lends itself to receiving foreign students, never sending UFMG students as exchange students to a foreign institution. In order for a UFMG student to take an overseas exchange, he must obtain a vacancy in the institution of his interest on his own, without intermediation of UFMG (exchange form called Free Mobility), or through a selective process conducted by UFMG, as the Minas Mundi program.
